Trade School, what an experiance, the Teachers were Tradesmen, good at there trade, use to telling apprentices what to do, no questions asked but filled with interesting stories of work, life and cars. The students, were fliied with the excitemt of there first job, a whole new schooling expeiance and Cars, and the very real entry into the adult world.

Cars influence on leisure in the 50’s

The car influenced leisure time by permitting South Australians to participate in more leisure activities, new activities such as Surfing, Car Trials, with more activities to do than previous generations. This was reflected by the steady decline in attendance at major football and cricket fixtures in the period from the 1950s: the decline was even sharper when attendance was calculated as a proportion of the rapidly increasing population

Reliability Trials

1954 The Redex Reliability Trial attracted huge crowds leading to traffic jams in the streets of Norwood. Competitors’ cars were parked on the playing surface of Norwood.

I have a memory of being amongst the car at he Norwood oval, along with listening to report of the Trial progress on the Radio, no live Television broadcasts.
